How Best To Clean An Extractor Hood
July 21, 2016 – by Tony Earnshaw
Extractor hoods must be cleaned regularly for health and safety reasons. Firstly, a build-up of grease can hang around in the hood, causing a fire hazard. Secondly, a warm and steamy hood is the perfect place for bacteria to grow, which could cause illness to spread. Furthermore, accidents resulting from failure to maintain your extractor hood, especially in large-scale establishments, can lead to invalid insurance claims. Avoid all of this drama with these simple cleaning tips.
The Filter
First things first: always make sure that the extractor is turned off before starting to clean or dismantle any part of the extractor, and seek professional advice if necessary.
Vinegar is your best friend when it comes to removing grease. While warm water alone may loosen the grease, it will just allow it to be moved around more easily without the addition of vinegar which will cut through the grease. Remove the metal filter from your extractor and soak it in a mixture of very hot, soapy water and a little vinegar for as long as possible. Then, remove particles with a cloth and leave to dry.
The Exterior
In many cases, the exterior of your extractor hood will look relatively clean, that is, until you touch it. A greasy residue often settles over the exterior, leaving it sticky and difficult to remove. Avoid the hard work a build-up can cause by regularly wiping down the exterior with detergents or more water and vinegar mixes. Ensure that you use a soft cloth to avoid scratches.
While you can dramatically improve the cleanliness of your extractor hood with simple cleaning techniques, it’s a great idea to have it professionally cleaned on a regular basis. This makes maintenance easier, and pre-empts fire hazards and health problems. Why not contact our kitchen and oven specialists for further help and advice.
