A Guide to Winter Pest Control
February 18, 2019 - by Tony Earnshaw
Although many of the most common pests are more prevalent in the summer – who hasn’t had flies spoil their picnic? – and insects certainly thrive in the warmer weather, the winter is not free of pests by any means. Indeed, many pests will seek out warmer conditions in homes during the colder months.
Of course, there are preventative measures that you can take to stop a home invasion of pests and to control them if they do get inside.
Mice are especially prevalent inside during the winter months as they seek out somewhere warm and dry, with a ready supply of food and water. Mice and rats will come inside anywhere they can and it’s a myth that a home must be in the city, or the countryside, or dirty.
Look out for evidence such as droppings or things that have been nibbled, as you are likely to see this before you see a mouse or rat. They can enter through a surprisingly small space. Also, be sure to check your loft space or garage regularly too. Catching them early on is key to avoiding an infestation.
Insects, particularly ants, are a very common pest in homes and have a penchant for kitchens, so making sure there are no sources of food readily accessible to them is very important. With ants, it’s more important to seek out the ones you can’t see because they work with strict hierarchies and those you do see will be working for those you can’t.
Sometimes, in spite of all your efforts, it might still be necessary to seek professional help. This might be particularly prudent if the infestation is ongoing or is growing.
